When you are a new home owner, you may be unsure about some of the concepts of basic home maintenance. One of these areas may be taking proper care of your furnace. If you own a Carrier furnace, one of the main things that you will need to know is about the furnace filter replacement.
All furnaces require that you either change out the filter or wash the filter that has been installed. Depending on the Carrier furnace that you have, you may need to replace the furnace filter once every three months or once every six months. You should check your Carrier furnace owner’s manual for recommendations on how often you should change your filter.
A clogged furnace filter can cause the furnace to stop working properly. You may find that the air is not blowing as it should or that the air coming from your vents is not the right temperature. If this is the case, a dirty furnace filter may be the culprit.
Once you have determined that you need to change your furnace filter, you should open up your furnace and check out what kind of filter you already have.
Make a note of the size, since you will need that information when you go out to buy a new one. Check to see if the filter is disposable (it should say so on the side) or if it is washable.
If you find that it is washable, turn off your furnace and take out the filter. Rinse it with lukewarm water until all the dirt and debris is gone and then let it dry before installing it back into the furnace.
If you determine that your filter is disposable, then it’s time to take a trip to the store. You can get furnace filters at almost any large retail outlet. You should look in the home improvement section of the store to find them.
Once you have located the filters, find the ones that are the correct size for your furnace. Check to see how often they will need to be replaced by looking at the package. Once you have chosen a furnace filter, you can take it home and install it into your Carrier furnace.
