Brothers Donald and Richard Rheem established Rheem Manufacturing Company in the 1920s when they purchased a galvanizing plant in San Francisco California.

By the 1940s and 1950s the brothers expanded their product line to water heaters and heating equipment. Over the years Rheem has expanded to include offices in Europe Canada Australia Asia and South America.

Rheem has over 20 types of gas furnaces that are energy efficient with ranges from 80% AFUE to 94.5% AFUE. Rheem model furnaces are manufactured with the Prestige Series name that describes the premium furnace the Value-Line Series describes the mid-range furnaces and the Classic Series describes the economy model furnaces.

Some of the Rheem furnaces have a limited lifetime warranty while the other models have a 20-year limited warranty.

The features of the Rheem furnaces are two-stage with the first stage operating between 40% to 60% and the second stage operating up to 100%; ECM variable speed blower motor in selected models direct spark ignition diagnostic boards that retain the history for easier troubleshooting of the unit and stainless steel heat exchangers in some models.

Rheem furnaces in consumer reviews are one of the most reliable and least repaired furnaces on the market. The Rheem Classic 90 Series has a 95% AFUE with two-stages allowing it run at 70% of full output on cooler days or 100% output on the coldest days of the year.

Some of the features of the Rheem furnaces include a two-stage operation compatible with two-stage or single stage thermostat a tubular heat exchanger made of stainless steel preventing corrosion and thermal fatigue and control board with the diagnostics controls for all operational functions including hook-ups for a humidifier and electronic air cleaner.

The furnaces are quiet due to the blower compartment being insulated and a special gas valve that is slow opening preventing the loud noises associated with some furnaces as they release the gas into the furnace.

Rheem Furnace Problems

  1. i have a RUUD heat pump made by Rheem and it has lasted us 25 years, so something must be pretty good about their product. i am now having to replace it and i was hoping to hear that the equipment of the heat pump has been updated to accommodate the new 410-A refrigerant. i heard the pressure is higher and causing problems in the new models. thanks for input.

  2. I contacted Rheem’s customer service and they are not willing to help at all with my problem. One of their distributors, Gensco, sold a Rheem system to a contractor, Haas Heating, who then installed the unit in my home. This is a contractor who was suppose to go through a class in order to install a Rheem mod 90 plus a heat pump. This unit was installed in May, 2009. To this date, I am still not able to get my system operating properly and the contractor has dropped off the face of earth. I have called him numerous times and also have called Gensco and asked them to help me over four months ago and no one is welling to help.

When I hired Haas Heating to Install this Mod90 and heat pump in my house, he told me he was certified by Rheem and can install this system. It has never worked properly since he installed it. He then asked one of Rheem’s sales rep to come and take a look. They got the unit working and hurried out of my house. The heat pump worked for 3 minutes then shut down again!

I am very surprised a company Rheem would authorize/allow someone this inexperienced who can not and does not know how to set up a system to have any contact with consumers! I have already paid over $12,000 to have this Rheem system installed and basically have a metal heap outside my house that does not do what is suppose to do and Rheem just hides behind their big name. Completely unwilling to help their customer!!!!! DON’T BUY THIS PRODUCT!

  3. In response to Joe Liu comments on the Rheem modulating 90 plus furnace. I have been installing Rheem furnaces for 20+ years now. Knowing what you are doing and how to properly install a system seems to be a thing of the past. People want to throw a furnace in with no common sense and horrible workman ship. Your problem is not the Rheem mod. furnace. There are many things that have to be done to this top of the line furnace. Setting dip switches, proper placement of the sensor in the supply duct, installation and configure of the thermostat that goes specifically with your furnace,as far as the heat pump. It is used for outside temperatures down around 32-34 degrees. That’s is a whole separate subject. Joe it might be hard for you to believe, because I’m sure you new and had great relationships with your contractors. But its plain to see the Rheem mod furnace is over there head, technically! We have installed around 20 because they are for the higher end customer. Not just everybody gets one. I can understand your frustration, but who your dealing with as so called technicians don’t know what they are doing. Does not take a rocket science to figure this one out.. Anyway that furnace has got a Heat Exchanger Warranty – Limited Lifetime Conditional Unit Replacement ,,Warranty – Limited Lifetime (Registration Required) and Limited Parts Warranty – 10 Years

Rheem supports its furnace equipment with strong
    limited warranties and dependable, professional
service. All parts are covered by a ten-year limited
parts warranty, and a limited lifetime Heat Exchanger
Warranty is applicable on all models. In addition, a conditional Limited
Lifetime Replacement Warranty applies to RGFE, RGGE or RGJF
models for Rheem to provide a replacement RGFE, RGGE or RGJF
Gas Furnace to the original purchaser if the heat exchanger fails during
the lifetime of the unit. See our Prestige SeriesTM Limited Warranty
Card for more details. Rheem is the top of the line equipment. Sorry for your bad luck in choosing a contactor of that nature.
